1. Each block is one attempt at a better substitution table, so Change is what the chain learned at that height. The score cannot fall, so held is the normal entry. A gain, written in red, is a table that beat everything before it.

2. A block's hash is read off the next block's prev_hash, because that is what a child commits to. The tip has no child yet, so the node reports it directly. That chain of commitments is the whole of what makes this a blockchain.
